Kaitaitikanga
Guardianship and Protection

Our foot print is small and we are kaitiaki (caretakers) of where we live and play.

We are a small sustainable business which takes pride in looking after where we live. Cleaning up the beaches, collecting rubbish, recycling it where we can. Keeping an eye on and monitoring our local species and protecting them from pests with trapping.

As kaitaiki we have a lot to keep an eye on. The Tata Islands are ecologically the most important in the Abel Tasman National Park. With a collection of rare plants such as the NZ Passionfruit, Wharawharangi to name a few, they are also home to the NZ reef heron(which is classified as causing concern). The islands are home to NZ largest Little Spotted Shag colony, there is a Red Bill Gull colony and it is wonderful to have the Black Backed Gull(karoro) also nesting in the area.

Creating habitats for our Korora (Blue Penguin) and encouraging other home owners in the Tata Beach area to invest in houses for our precious birds. We are lucky to have three families nesting at Golden Bay Kayaks and we are loving watching our Korora grow safely in our community. A healthy Korora population means we have a healthy sea.

Tiaki - Care for New Zealand has been set up by a group of New Zealand tourism organisations to actively encourage local and international travellers to care for our country as much as we do.

Tiaki means to care for people and place. The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, now and for future generations. Golden Bay Kayaks’ values align with Tiaki. We are wholeheartedly behind the Tiaki Promise and encourage all visitors to our region to act as guardians of Aotearoa New Zealand.

We ask that you respect the Tiaki Promise while travelling in New Zealand by following these guidelines:

  • Care for land, sea and nature, treading lightly and leaving no trace

  • Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all

  • Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind

And use the Tiaki hashtag to show your support #tiakipromise
